I just emailed my house of representatives person the following regarding the proposed "antisemitism Awareness" bill by Rep Jeffries...
Representative Strickland - I am writing today to encourage you to vote against a proposed bill put forth by Representative Jeffries designating protests against Israel as antisemitic. Israeli has violated international law and according to the ICC there is a "plausible" case for genocide in their actions. While antisemitism absolutely exists, the point of these protests are a reaction to Israeli actions against the Palestinian people and to the policy response by the United States toward Israel and are not based in antisemitism.
Our first Amendment makes clear, and has been upheld by the Supreme Court on several occasions, that We the People have the right to publicly express our disagreement with government policy without fear of retribution. Classifying protests against the US policy toward Israel as antisemitic would be a clear violation of those rights. Your oath is to protect the US constitution, an oath that I know you take very seriously.
Aside from the fact that criticism of Israel is not necessarily criticism of Jewish people, it sets a dangerous precedent. If criticism of Israel is antisemitic, then criticism of Arab countries for their actions would be Islamophobia. Criticism of African nations would be racist against African peoples. Criticism of China would be anti-Asian. We must maintain consistency and our ability to call to account any nation that violates international law, and the policy response by the United States to those violations, regardless of that country's race, faith or creed. Please vote no against the bill being proposed by representative Jeffries. Thank you for your time and consideration.
